After two California Interscho-
lastic Federation championships,
four Pacific League titles, six phenomenal years and a Pasadena area
Coach of the Year award, coach Bill
"Rocky" Moore has pulled up his
stakes at John Muir v
High School, he has
come and lend his
knowledge and passion
for the game of basketball as the new PCC assistant men's basketball
coach.
Moore will take over
the part-time position in
joining head coach
George Terzian and current assistant Micheal
Jones on the men's basketball coaching staff.
"This,"Moore
said,"is an opportunity
to get back into coaching college basketball."
Coaching on the college
level is familiar territory
for Moore who was the
women's head coach at Glendale
College in 1987-88.
At the university level, Moore
was the men's assistant coach at the
University of Southern California
(1982-84) and at Cal Poly Pomona
(1985-87). Previous to Pomona, he
coached in many different capacities at Dominguez Hills, Southeastern Community College, Iowa, and
Louisiana Tech University.
The decision to leave the student-
athletes at Muir was a difficult one.
Moore says that the primary reason
that he stayed was because of the
students. The days of coaching at
Muir were not always joyous times
for Moore.
He was asked to sit out two crucial games in the 1993 season after
some of the parents of the team
members complained about his
coaching methods. The students
and the fans, however, rallied to his
support. That ultimately led that
team into the CIF finals and brought
them home as champions.
I've always
wanted to
participate on
the coaching •
staff at PCC.
Rocky Moore,
New Assistant
Coach
Moore brings with him some very
important tools which have been
successful in helping him shape
some of todays top college players.
"Family is the number one
priority. The teams that I've coached
in the past put basketball on a priority list; God, family, education and
then basketball. As a coach I have
the responsibilitytobring
that to the team."
Moore believes that
with the building of a
basketball "fam
ily" there comes order and rules that are
essential in having a
team where everybody is
responsible and committed to everyone else.
Recruiting hard working, comitted players is
another aspect of the job
of a assistant coach.
According to district
recruiting rules. PCC
coaches are allowed to
scout all the Pasadena
area High schools for
potential team members.
This is sometimes not
such an easy task since PCC does not
provide full scholarships that cover
tuition, food, housing and books like
some other junior colleges.
Moore, however, is not discouraged by this fact. He believes that as
the team and the coaching staff work
to build a strong players and a winning reputation, that will be all the
incentive players will need to get on
board with the Lancers.
Along with being Terzian's right
hand on the court, Moore also teaches
health education during the day at
Muir and in the evenings at PCC
"This was definitely a goal of
mine,"says Moore. "I've always
wanted to participate on the coaching staff at PCC." There are other
goals on his mind as well.
Moore says that one day that he
would like to coach Division I and
professional basketball. "But for
now," he said, "I'm excited about
the opportunity to facilitate Tarzian
and make his job easier. I want to be
thebest assistant coach ever at PCC."
