Notes
Floor plan of the Gillis Residence . According to Myron Hunt , 1868 - 1952 The Search for a Regional Architecture published for an Exhibition in 1984 , in their "List of Architectural Projects by Myron Hunt " the house was at 406 Adelaide and was described as: "The calm , beautifully composed Robert C . Gillis house in Santa Monica is the only one of the houses published in The Craftsman still in existence (figs . 22 , 23) . The first story is warm gray stucco , while the second story and gently sloping gabled roofs are covered with brown shakes . The casement windows on the front are single-paned to take advantage of the canyon view , and two of those in the second story are arranged as angled oriel bays to direct the eye down to the sea and up to the mountains . The casements in the rear wing are square-paned , and the square is repeated in the simple lattice of the eave vents . The entrance hall turns into one of the covered loggias , which surround the garden court on two sides . The loggia is the only access to the dining room at the rear of the house . This is as far as Hunt and Grey ever carried their concept of indoor-outdoor living. "
